New game to rival The Sims...?
"Sim-ply Amazing: I saw a game that has the potential to be the next version of The Sims in terms of expandability and mainstream popularity. We preview it next month after the embargo!" This quote was found on Gamespy's main page -- but what game could they be talking about? It couldn't be this could it?

The Movies in the limelight
Gamespy has rated "The Movies" as being the 13th Most Wanted Game of 2004. "Game designer Peter Molyneux is known for his ambitious, high-concept game designs. Sometimes they work, sometimes not, but you can always count on one thing: Molyneux's games will innovate, and they'll give you something new to do. That's the case with his latest undertaking and #13 on our list: The Movies. It's almost two games in one: a crunchy, chocolaty strategy game with a creamy-white creative game in the center. Okay, we'll explain. Read more about it @ Gamespy. Incidentally, recently we had a visit from the US gaming magazine Game Informer. They took a good look at the game, liked it, then took photos of all the department Leads -- including yours truly. We also had to say which kinds of movies we were looking forward to making, and list some of our favourite films. So... if you want to see me in a magazine, go out and find Game Informer. I'm not sure which issue it'll be in, but I imagine sooner rather than later. Possibly it's only available in the US, though. If I get to see the magazine I'll try and scan the preview in, and post it up here on my blog.

Bush sure writes some grim Sci-Fi
"The Earth has depleted all its natural resources. Life has become grim and hopeless. The only viable option for mankind is to colonize the moon, mine its surface for minerals and provide a limitless source of clean energy for the home planet. That's not just the basic plotline of the disastrous 1975 television series 'Space: 1999,' it also describes President Bush's latest energy proposal." Haha! This article is hilarious -- definitely recommended if you've been following some of the recent US space-related matters.

There are substitutes for almost everything...
...except work and sleep. That's the latest words of wisdom from my little calendar thingy, for Friday the 16th of January. To be quite honest -- as I peeled off the build up of lost days till I found the 16th -- I was expecting the sentence to be obscure, or not at all relevant to me. So my little "witty" comment was going to be "Ahh yes, a very apt sentance. Though, apt for someone else, and not at all me." So I was somewhat disappointed when the sentence seemed not just relevant, but very close to the bone indeed. Not that I mind so much -- I'm in my element! Yes, work and sleep... oh and a bit of Civilization 3, Babylon 5 (bought myself series 1-3 on DVD ... Brilliant) and yappering on about Civilization 3 in the CivFanatics Forums. [Edit: I really should spend more time in the Lionhead The Movies Forums -- drop by and say Hello! I'll try if you do... though I've been trying to stay away from forums after being quite active as moderator of the old Creatures Docking Station forums. *cough* the CivFanatics forums don't count -- I've been a member since 2002 and have only made 265 posts! *cough*] But anyhow. By the way, the guy sitting behind me in the webcam photo below, that's one of our programmers -- Mike Movel. And yes, that's me testing out whether it really did look OK to wear a small black T-shirt on top of my long sleeve brown top. What do you think? Yes, it would indeed help if I'd had a hair cut... it's so long now, I'm not bothering with gel and just letting it do its natural thing! I'm going to update my site sometime soon -- possibly in time for my birthday in February. Basically I want to merge back the writing and photo blogs into this one, and make my main blog page simply www.frimlin.com instead. My Science News blog, Sciotecha, will still stay where it is. Then pretty much all of Frimlin will be up on one page. Oh well. At least when I'm dead they can cut back on the gravestone costs and just link to my blog instead...

Better to wear out, than rust out.
This is the quote from the "Monday 5th of January 2004" page on my new little calendar pad thingy. I think it's apt. But then I am sure they will all be -- even if it is in some obscure way, or other.
So a bit of rust isn't so good for me, huh? Tell that to Mars. I've never seen it as rust, myself -- to me I just think of them as cobwebs, which make a crinkly sound as I walk -- but I can't hear them because I'm listening to the violins.

I made a mod
Wow -- I haven't released any "third party" game expansions in a long, long time. About an hour ago I released a new, and rather simple, "mod" for Civilization 3: Conquests. Read all about it at the CivFanatics Forums.
Basically, each of the Civilizations represented in the game have certain "traits" which give them certain bonuses in the game. Traits include Religious, Commercial, Militaristic and Scientific, amongst others. All I've done for this mod is to alter some of the Civilizations to use traits different to their default ones. Instead they now have traits more in tune with my perception of what they should be, based on how the Civilization behaved historically -- but also so that each Civ had it's own unique combination of two traits. This wasn't always possible.
Not sure how popular it will be, if at all -- it's a pretty minor set of changes, and I haven't spent *any* time on checking how "the balance of power" is now. Also, out of laziness and lack of time I've done nothing to justify any of my changes... so much for self advertisement! ;)
