Back from... Barcelona!
Hola! I've just got home from a wonderfully long "weekend" in Barcelona, with my dear Mum, Evelyn. :) Thursday through to Monday -- I only wish it had been longer.
What a fantastic city! I'm still mulling it over in my mind. I can clearly see the leaves on all those palm trees, merrily flapping in the warm Catalonian breeze.
And the Sagrada Familia -- oh my! We spent our last evening sitting by it, in a decadently divine pizza restaurant. We sipped delicious Spanish vino blanc, and stared in admiration at Gaudi's eye-worthy masterpiece.
I was very much able to suspend knowledge of any care in the world. And there I was thinking Lisbon had relaxed and recharged me enough already. I guess I was wrong -- I feel bliss!
I'm loaded with undeveloped photos of this beautiful Mediterranean port metropolis. I know you're already waiting for the Lisbon ones -- seems they'll all appear on my photo blog at the same time, at this rate! They'll all be worth it, though. I assure you.
Brilliant. My mind is wandering idly through La Ramblas.
Gracias Barcelona, Gracias. Until we meet again.

Cheap weekend, relaxing... but away, again, on Thursday
I didn't even leave the house. I was going to head into town and get my Lisbon photos developed, but... I just couldn't be arsed. Well at least it was cheap. And I even managed to rearrange my bedroom -- my bed is now right up against the window. I suddenly have a whole new room, with a lot more usable space. I even took a moment to put some maps and postcards from Lisbon up on the wall, and some Lisbon tickets on my noticeboard.
I spent all Saturday watching some DVDs that I'd been lent by my friend and colleague, Nick Dry. Nick and his girlfriend Esther Price invited me around to their new place in central Guildford on Friday evening. Nick cooked up a chilli, which was delicious despite it being stuffed full with mushrooms. Sometimes mushrooms disagree with me. This was definitely not one of those times -- what a good cook! :) The chilli was a special recipe which featured, amongst other things, dark chocolate! You'd never have known, but the taste was definitely to my liking. Left their place sometime around 2am, five of Nick's DVDs in hand. We waited for a taxi outside their place for a while, but after 20 mins or so, I decided to walk into the heart of Guildford and try and find a taxi.
Ended up walking all the way home, instead. Ahh well -- nice bit of exercise for my legs. :)
So which DVDs did I borrow and watch this weekend? In this order... Ghost World with Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson & Steve Buscemi -- nice film. Ice Age, a quirky animated adventure based in a literally cool pre-historic time. Chocolat -- delicious! Staring the lovely Juliette Binoche, the ever radiant Judi Dench, Lena Olin, Alfred Molina and a rather endearing appearance from Johnny Depp. After that it was Charlie's Angels with Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore -- I lost interest half way through, but that could have been because of how many films I'd watched already that day. But it didn't stop me from concentrating on the final film of the evening. I ended with a midnight screening of Donnie Darko which left me in a bit of a spin. I'm even thinking about watching it again tonight, so I can at least try to get my head around it.
Today I watched Pi -- the name is actually the Greek letter for that figure, rather than my English alternative. The film is about a brilliant mathematician who stared into the Sun as a child and now he's in a manic search through the universe of numbers to find a way to predict changes in the stock market. Hey, I used to look at the Sun as a kid and I'm perfectly fine. Good film. I finished off just a moment ago with one from my own collection -- Secrets & Lies by Mike Leigh. I love this film -- not just because it deals with adoption, a topic very close to my heart. I just love the characters, and their interactions. He doesn't deal with perfect people and ideal situations. I once did a review of many of Mike Leigh's films back in school, when I was about 17. Excellent, the lot of them. I'm starting to visualise myself building up my DVD collection with some of them.
But anyhow, thanks for the DVDs, Nick -- good to have some more inspiration for work. :) All I can think of now is camera angles and animations reflecting the many varied nuances of conversation... but I digress.
The little review, and photos, of Lisbon I promised is still coming. I'm not sure it'll be done before I disappear on my next whimsical excursion. Oh... didn't I tell you? I'm going away again! Somewhere else hot, somewhere I've never been before... somewhere where I hope my tan will be extended even further. But where am I going? I can't tell you, yet -- it's a secret! I'm going abroad with my lovely English Mum and even she won't know where we're going till we check in at Gatwick.
All I've told her is it's somewhere warm. :) So no, not Amsterdam again! But funny you should mention that... I'm starting to get the Amsterdam itch. Maybe it's time I finally used up by Frequent Flyer points and hit the Dam for a long weekend?
It's odd. After being here almost five years and this is the first time I've ever really done the holiday thing properly. Sure I visited Amsterdam a few times, and returned to New Zealand for a couple of weeks. Then there was that day trip over to Boulogne in France -- feels like ages ago now, though. But now it seems like I'm all over the place. It's fun. I'm really, really enjoying myself. And heck, I deserve it. I've had too many worries in my recent past, and it's good to feel happy and secure about things again.
So I'm gonna live these happy days and there ain't nobody who's gonna rain on my parade. No, sir. So worry not, for I am happy and yet taking care.
I just wish I had a digital f**k*n camera. Ahh well, my trusty Kodak SLR will have to do, for now.
Be well, ya'll. I loves ya. ;) XX

A little known fact is that the mother of Wizard Frimlin was a wise herbal healer, Witch Frimaia.
However, the mother of Ash is Evelyn. And it's her birthday today. :-)
Happy Birthday, Mum!
Sorry if this makes you blush!

Back from Lisbon!
I'm back from a long weekend (Friday though to Monday) in Lisbon, Portugal. It was lovely! I've got loads of great photos too. I'll be writing up a full review later tonight, and the photos should be up on my photo blog later this week.

Tintagel, Heligon
New photos in my photo blog, including: Castle Tintagel (23/08/03) and The Lost Gardens of Heligon (25/08/03).
If you haven't noticed already, the archives are made for each day -- and I'm trying to place photos on the day they were taken. I'm not always going to be able to remember the dates for older photos, so instead I'll make close approximations. I'll let you know when that becomes the case, though!

Costs, Friends & Photos
The cost of an intended quiet weekend -- spending nothing more than that which is necessary for a haircut and processing the film from recent holiday in Devon and Cornwall -- in an attempt to save money? Under £30.
Buying take-away food for two, twice, drinking pints of lager at The Whitehouse pub in Guildford and disregarding need to sort out hair cut? Over £50.
The cost of talking deeply about now and the future, reflecting on the past, and generally losing self in hearty conversation with my best mate Nigel? Priceless.
PS: The photos of the holiday in Cornwall & Devon, however, have now been developed. I'm currently constructing a new site -- a "photo blog" -- especially to display them on. I'll let you know when it's done. Once they're up there I'll start adding other photos from times now past...

Frimlin What?
My "About Frimlin" page needed updating, so...
I left it un-updated for well over a year!
And now, as though I've only just realised it needed to be done, I've finally updated and renamed it.
And I quote: "Who is this strange Wandering Wizard? Soley for your individual benefit, after a process involving bathtubs of sweat and thousands of broken fingers, here is everything you always wanted to know about Frimlin, but were never sufficiently enthralled about to ask."
Frimlin What?

BLOGGER - Talk To... Them
I talked to Blogger, because for some reason, it's all screwy for me. I'm only able to blog via the BlogThis! button on my Google Toolbar *gasp* When I log into Blogger.com, the page displays incorrectly. It makes it impossible for me to use Blogger or Blogger Pro except by this Blogthis business. Oh phooey.
This is what I said to Blogger:
Heya Blogger :-)
When I log into Blogger Pro at the moment, and every now and then for the past few days, the page is displayed all screwed up. Form elements like the buttons have warped dimensions, fonts are displayed smaller than usual -- and everything is all clumped to the left side of the screen.
I'm not low on RAM or anything, and it's happened both here at home on my Win98 IE6 _and_ Mozilla -- and at work on my WinXP IE6.
I assumed it was something amiss with Blogger or Blogger Pro. But I thought you would display a message on your main page if something was amiss. So maybe it's just me. :(
It was fine earlier today and I could post and publish multiple times -- now it's all weird-o. ;-)
Can you help me, please? :-)
I do hope Blogger can help me out, because it's awful restrictive here in this ickle BlogThis! pop-up window jobby. Help!

Three months in the Lion's den
I had my three month review the other day.
That's right -- I've been at Lionhead now for over three months! And the good news is, I'm still here.
I'm really enjoying it too. I'm getting loads of great opportunities to make a valuable contribution to the game, and am really loving the team I work with.
What more can a wizard require? :) This wizard is indeed very pleased, I assure you. It's so reassuring to feel some job security again.
I just wish my bank balance was less red.
